The community was founded by Lyons Industrial Home in the late 1800s as a way to wean tuberculosis sufferers away from large cities and expose them to healthier living conditions. The idea was that if patients remained in healthy environments for an extended period of time, they would have better success at overcoming their physical maladies. In addition to treating tuberculosis sufferers, the institution also served children with orthopedic problems and retried adults. Today it is still actively treating patients and has expanded its services to include cancer care as well as physical and mental wellness programs. Additionally, it has become an academic institution where medical students obtain clinical training.
